Numerous
projects have been performed in the Malibu area. We are experienced
in the complex geologic environment both along the beach and
the hillsides and how they impact proposed development. Thrust
faulting has created a complex geologic environment that has
resulted in major landslides and potentially unstable coastal
slopes.
A thorough understanding of the geology is necessary to safely
and economically develop within the hills above Malibu. Numerous
projects have been performed along the coast from Santa Monica,
along the Pacific Palisades and throughout the Malibu Beach
community. Projects include additions and modifications of existing
beachfront and hillside homes, new beachfront developments,
and shoreline protection devices.
The suitability of sites for private sewage disposal systems
and their impact on site stability are considered in the evaluations.

Hillside developments in the Los Angeles
hillsides have been performed in communities from Woodland
Hills to Hollywood to Pasadena and Glendale. Developments
involving hillside grading and construction over natural slopes
have considered the geologic conditions unique to Los Angeles
hillsides. The geologic conditions have been complicated by
past grading prior to adoption of modern codes. Studies have
determined feasible development schemes that consider safe
and stable sites and the requirements of the City Building
Codes.
The causes of damage to developed properties
have been determined for sites throughout California. The
majority of our projects have involved southern California
developments from Ventura to San Diego. The scope of work
performed for homeowners and insurance companies has included
visual evaluation of damage to comprehensive studies to arrive
at schemes for repair and stabilization. Treatments for fill
settlement, expansive soil movement and slope instability
are tailored to the magnitude of the hazard and the desired
level of performance of the improvement. The extent of property
damage associated with major earthquakes in northern and southern
California has been determined along with advice to repair
the earthquake damage. Investigations of properties have been
performed to evaluate the 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake,
the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake in the San Francisco Bay area,
the 1992 Landers earthquake, and the 1994 Northridge earthquake
in southern California.
